Chelsea’s run to the final
Chelsea famously won the Club World Cup in 2021 by beating Palmeiras. Will that experience stand them in good stead on Sunday as they push for a second title before a global audience? Chelsea won the previous version of this tournament when there were fewer teams involved. But the revamped format hasn’t caused them to stumble, with the Londoners blazing a trail of glory to the deciding match in New York.
The Brits competed in Group D, where they finished as runners-up following two wins and a defeat, scoring six goals but conceding three. They had no problems beating ES Tunis and Los Angeles FC, but lost to Brazilian Serie A outfit Flamengo, who finished with two wins and a draw. In the knockout rounds, Chelsea beat Benfica with ease in the Round of 16, before doing a Brazilian double, eliminating Palmeiras 2-1 in the quarter-finals, and Fluminense on Tuesday in the semi-finals. They’re now one win away from being world champions.
PSG’s run to the final
PSG won the French Ligue 1 title by 19 points, ahead of runners-up Marseille. The runaway leaders could prioritise winning their first Champions League title, and they did it in style. PSG hammered Inter Milan 5-0 in a final played at the Allianz Arena in Munich. They made a mockery of what had been billed as a 50/50 contest, taking control of the match early before burying their opponents. Few teams have won the European Cup quite as impressively as PSG did in spring.
With confidence in the ranks, PSG travelled to the United States for their first appearance in the Club World Cup. They appeared in Group B, winning two and losing one. The six points collected were equal to both Botafogo and Atletico Madrid in a bunch finish, but the team from the French capital progressed on goal difference, scoring six and conceding only one. In the knockout rounds, Luis Enrique’s challengers beat Inter Miami 4-0 in the Round of 16 at the end of June, before downing Bayern Munich 2-0 in the quarter-finals, and Real Madrid 4-0 in Wednesday’s semi-final. They’ve already proven why they’re kings of the continent.
Chelsea vs PSG head-to-head
The head-to-head stats associated with Sunday’s match make for interesting reading. The Londoners and Parisians have met eight times previously, between 2004 and 2016, with all games played in the Champions League.
PSG enter with three wins, Chelsea have two victories, with the other three meetings ending in a draw. PSG won the last two with a 2-1 scoreline, after drawing 1-1 and 2-2 with the Blues. Chelsea haven’t beaten PSG since April 2014 at Stamford Bridge, achieved thanks to goals from Andre Schurrle and Demba Ba.
What hints can we take from the stats? The most obvious is both teams to score, with the rivals finding the net at least once each in their previous four and five of six. The World Cup seems to have brought the best out of both clubs, with the managers happy to play free-flowing, attractive football.
Celebrate with a nice price
You can bet on both teams to score as a single or add it to your weekend multiples, including accumulators. If you’re looking for a pick with bigger odds attached, why not choose sides and back either PSG to win and both teams to score or Chelsea to win and both teams to score? They’ve already proven their firepower in the US, and there’s more to come.
The odds suggest another French win is likely, but you’ll enjoy an attractive price if you go against the traders and back Chelsea in the both score and win market.
