The latest English Premier League season is almost upon us, with football fans counting down the hours until the big kick-off. The coming campaign will be the 127th season in history, and the 34th of the Premier League era. Liverpool enter as the defending champions, having wrestled the prize from Manchester City, ending Pep Guardiola’s dominance by some distance.
Can Arne Slot’s Reds make it back-to-back titles, or will the Citzens fire back to reclaim what fans believe is rightly theirs? City finished third last term behind Liverpool and Arsenal, but ahead of Chelsea and Newcastle United. Tottenham Hotspur also won the Europa League, but has since sacked Australian boss Ange Postecoglou. Chelsea won the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States after spending freely in the summer transfer market.

Contenders for the crown
Let’s now look at the betting favourites in a bit more detail.
Liverpool
The opposition couldn’t land a glove on Liverpool last season as they finished miles clear of Arsenal and the chasing pack. Stats of 25 wins, nine draws, and four defeats, with 86 goals scored and 41 conceded, ensured Slot’s men passed the finish line with a tally of 84 points, ten more than the Gunners, who ended in the silver medal position.
Liverpool strengthened their team during the summer months, but how will they handle playing in the Premier League and the new Champions League format? Only time will tell, but the games will come thick and fast at the Reds this time.
Arsenal
Mikel Arteta’s team have finished as the best of the rest in each of the last two seasons. Will fans suffer the pain of another near-miss this time? It’s certainly possible. Arsenal is capable of matching any team at this level on their day, but a lack of consistency has cost them dear in recent challenges.
They’ve fallen at the final hurdle, and that suggests a mentality problem in the dressing room. Will Arteta get it right at the third time of asking? Possibly, but I’d be looking for better odds, given the risks. Too many question marks hang over the Emirates.
Man City
For the first time in years, Manchester City find they can’t spend their way out of trouble. They’ve been active in the transfer market and continue to throw cash around, but the club must learn to tighten its belt and operate on a budget or risk having sanctions imposed by the governing bodies.
The level of player connected to City this summer has been underwhelming, certainly by their usual standards, and it could be another frustrating year for the club. Can they win the Premier League? Almost certainly. Will they win the Premier League? I wouldn’t bet on it at the current odds.
Chelsea
What can we expect from the recent winners of the Club World Cup? Chelsea upset the odds to hammer French Ligue 1 and Champions League winners PSG in the final, upsetting the odds in the process. The Blues made light work of a side that had blazed a trail of glory to the final and saw themselves being crowned as world champions as a fitting end to the season. They didn’t appreciate just how much Chelsea had improved in recent times.
There’s still plenty of work to do for this new-look Chelsea side, but they are gelling fast, and I make them a great bet to win the Premier League. An offer of 44/5 is much bigger than I expected to find, making them the value play. The only slight concern when betting on Chelsea to win the EPL is that they may run out of gas before the end, given their efforts at the Club World Cup and in Europe.
Man Utd
It has been a while since football fans have spoken about Manchester United as title contenders, but they sit in a prominent position in the pre-season betting. Is it worth taking a chance on the Red Devils at a bumper price? I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off supporting Man Utd for the title, if that was their approach, but there’s better out there.
Man Utd are fifth in the outright betting list, meaning traders expect them to perform better than Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa. I do predict improvement at the Theatre of Dreams, but I don’t expect them to suddenly overcome their problems and win the title. That will take a little more time and a bit more cash.
Premier League predictions
Chelsea look the pick of the bunch this season. Yes, Liverpool are strong and enter as the champions, but that’s reflected in their price. They’ll also face a marathon season as they fight on all fronts, starting with the Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium this weekend. The Reds are a good bet, but they’re not for me.
I prefer the chances of Chelsea, who will go from strength to strength following their success at the Club World Cup. They boast a talented squad that’s young, energetic and ambitious. If they can hit the ground running this term, I see no reason why the boys in blue from Stamford Bridge can’t bring back the glory years.
