Premier League Returns After European Action
The Premier League returns once again after the European action midweek, with matches affecting both the top, the bottom and of course where the bragging rights will end up in the North East.
After Arsenal’s late heartbreak at Villa Park last Saturday, the chasing pack have been given hope, with Manchester City cutting their lead at the top to just 2 points. The leaders shuffled the pack at Club Brugge midweek and ran out ready 3-0 winners, and could have the chance to further rest their stars as they host winless Wolverhampton Wanderers at The Emirates on Saturday evening. Rob Edwards’ side have suffered 8 straight Premier League defeats, scoring just 3 goals in the process and their misery looks set to continue at table topping Arsenal. Protests during the first 15 minutes of their 4-1 defeat to Manchester United at Molineux, reflect the bleak times that face Wolves supporters and Arsenal could well turn on the style to get back on track following last weekend.

Chelsea Look to Reset as Everton Arrive
Elsewhere on Saturday Chelsea will look to get their league campaign back on track. Following a spirited 1-1 draw with ten men against Arsenal, The Blues have followed up with 2 disappointing league results and a Champions League defeat to Atalanta in Bergamo on Tuesday. Defeat at Elland Road and an uneventful 0-0 draw at The Vitality stadium has seen Enzo Maresca’s men slip out of the Champions League places. They host a resurgent Everton, who will have the chance to leapfrog Chelsea, should they take the spoils at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The toffees have won 4 of their last 5 games, with striker Thierno Barry finally getting off the mark in a 3-0 home defeat of Nottingham Forest last time out. Chelsea’s home form has been patchy so Everton will fancy their chances of getting something at least to take home to Merseyside.
Tyne-Wear Derby Returns to the Top Flight
Onto Sunday’s action, which surely sees the game of the weekend. The long awaited return of the Tyne-Wear derby to England’s top flight has been considerably spiced up by the extremely impressive start made by the black cats. Sunderland sit 3 places above their North-East rivals, however there is just one point separating the two before their meeting at The Stadium of Light. Regis Le Bris has overseen a dream start to life back in the top flight, considering they were many people’s favourites to go down before a ball was kicked. Sunderland will look to add to their unbeaten home record (W4, D3) in their final game before they lose a league topping 7 players to the African Cup of Nations. Newcastle make the short trip off the back of a disappointing late draw with Bayer Leverkusen, and really with their domestic season yet to ignite. There have been signs of what we have become accustomed to with Eddie Howe’s side, with a 2-1 home win over Manchester City and a convincing 4-1 away win at Everton. However they have been plagued by inconsistencies, especially on the road, with only 6 points from 7 outings. With the vociferous home support at their back and the potential for tired legs in their rival’s camp after their trip to Leverkusen on Wednesday, I have a sneaky feeling that Sunderland might get the job done against their bitter rivals.
City Chase Arsenal as United Close the Weekend
Manchester City will be looking to keep the pressure on Arsenal with a win at Selhurst Park, but it might be a tricky task against a Palace team flying high in 4th going into the weekend. A late winner at Fulham saw the Eagles nudge their way into the Champions League spots, to continue their upward trajectory under Oliver Glasner. City are looking for a 4th league win in a row, off the back of their 2-1 win in the Bernabeu on Wednesday. A big factor in City’s strong run has been the return to top form of Phil Foden, who notched his 6th league goal of the season in their comfortable win at home to Sunderland.

Monday Night Football
Finally on Monday night, Manchester United host Bournemouth. The Cherries are 6 games without a win, however they appeared slightly more solid in their home draw with Chelsea last time out. United are off the back of two disappointing home draws to Everton, where they played against 10 men for the majority and a struggling West Ham, however Mason Mount (3.6 to score anytime) starred in a 4-1 away win at bottom side Wolves on Monday. Bryan M’buemo will be looking to depart to AFCON in style, as he plays his last game for United before heading off to Morocco with his national team.
