Teams with a perfect start

Let’s reflect on the few teams that ended the three-match group stage with a 100% record.

Only one side won all their group matches, and that was English Premier League giants, Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s boys racked up a trio of wins by beating Juventus, Al Ain, and Wydad Casablanca, ensuring they finished in pole position of pool G. City opened with a simple 2-0 over Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia, before smashing Al Ain 6-0 in Atlanta.

There was time for one more impressive win, with Man City sending a statement of intent with the 5-2 destruction of Juventus in Orlando. City made a mockery of what had been billed as a 50/50, pick-em contest. They ended a long winless run against the Old Lady in style. What’s more, they appear to be hitting their stride, with more to come.

Only Man City could blaze a trail of glory to the title with a perfect record. That would be quite an achievement for the team from the Etihad Stadium, proving they are well along the road to recovery following a disappointing season. After losing the Premier League title to Liverpool and the Champions League crown to PSG, winning the Club World Cup 2025 trophy would help appease a fan base that’s accustomed to winning major competitions.

Other unbeaten teams

Although the groups finished with only one team on three wins, we did see a few more cross the finish line with proud unbeaten records. In Group A, the top two teams finished without defeat. Palmeiras and Inter Miami carded one win and two draws. In Group C, Benfica secured two wins and a draw to lead the way.

In Group D, Brazilian side Flamengo were the only unbeaten side, thanks to two wins and a draw. That return left them ahead of runners-up Chelsea, who had two wins and a defeat. Both Inter Milan and Monterrey avoided a loss in Group E, with the Italians winning the division thanks to two wins and a draw.

In Group F, Borussia Dortmund took control, progressing with an unbeaten record of two wins and a draw, ahead of Fluminense, who had one win and two draws. Will one team go all the way to the title without suffering a single loss? It’s possible, and you can predict the champion in the US at Gamblr.

Highest scorers

Knowing which side scored the most goals in the groups could help lead us towards an outright champion. But which team were the sharpest shooters?

In addition to being the only team with a 100% record, Manchester City also scored the most goals, notching an impressive 13 goals. Interestingly, they scored 11 of those in their final two games, starting slow in the opener before gathering pace and showing their attacking flair. The five goals scored past Juventus were a reminder not to take Pep and his team lightly. There’s no doubt they have the firepower to hurt any team at this level.

The second-highest scorers in the CWC groups were Bayern Munich. The Germans finished second in Group C, behind Benfica, with two wins and a defeat. Most pundits predicted Munich would dominate, but they appeared to take their foot off the gas, having already qualified for the Round of 16. Despite the silver medal finish, Bayern Munich scored ten goals past amateur side Auckland City, and another two against Boca Juniors.

Worst defences

Which of the qualifying teams had the worst defence? The stats show Juventus finished second in Group G, despite conceding an alarming six goals. But there’s more to the story. We must remember that the Italians conceded five of those six goals to Man City in the final round of games from the pool.

Other teams that conceded three goals are Inter Miami, Chelsea, and Borussia Dortmund. It’s worth keeping that in mind, as a leaky defence could prove the difference between ending as the champion and the runners-up. Knowing the teams with a fragile backline could also help you find a profit in the both teams to score market this week.

Interestingly, Chelsea thrashed Benfica 4-1 after extra time in the Round of 16 at the weekend following an extended weather delay. Bayern Munich conceded another two goals in their Round of 16 meeting with Flamengo on Monday, but scored four to progress.

Players to watch

Jaoa Neves added another two goals to PSG’s tally, ensuring another win when the Parisians thumped Inter Miami 4-0 on Sunday. It was a match the Champions League winners were favourite to claim, and they did it in style, eliminating their opponents from Major League Soccer.

Harry Kane was also in fine form in the Round of 16, netting a brace as his side swept past Flamengo on Sunday. The England striker is enjoying life with the German Bundesliga champions, and will have his eye on ending as the top marksman.
