We’ve arrived at round ten of the English Premier League season as the campaign begins to gather pace. Arsenal are the current leaders, sitting four points clear of nearest rivals and surprise package Bournemouth. Defending champions Liverpool are outside the top four, while bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers are the only top-flight side yet to win.
Saturday’s EPL programme begins a hectic November, with seven matches played, before we enjoy a double header on Sunday, with the spare decided on Monday evening. Brighton vs Leeds, Saturday, 15:00 BST
Our first pick of the weekend comes from East Sussex, where we’re backing Brighton to make their home advantage count against Leeds United. The locals start 13th in the table after losing 4-2 at Old Trafford last week. The final scoreline suggests a competitive match, but the Red Devils were 2-0 up at half-time and never looked like losing the points. We take more from Brighton’s 2-1 win over Newcastle in their previous home match. They also drew 2-2 with Spurs and beat Man City at this venue.
Leeds United travel two places and a point behind their hosts with nine games on the board. The visitors’ form shows they’ve won three, drawn two, and lost four games so far, scoring nine goals, but conceding 14. On closer inspection, we notice that Leeds have the same for-and-against stats as Fulham, who are one place above the relegation zone. Daniel Farke’s men lost 2-1 to Tottenham and 2-0 at Burnley in October, but did edge a poor West Ham side at Elland Road last Friday.
Leeds will take confidence from last week’s win, but let’s remember West Ham are second from the bottom of the league and stuck on a miserable run. Brighton have already proven they’re a match for any side at this stadium with the crowd behind them. The Seagulls won 1-0 when Leeds were last in town, and haven’t lost to Saturday’s opponents in six games, a run stretching back to January 2021.
Fulham vs Wolves, Saturday, 15:00 BST
Moving to London, Fulham face a must-win against bottom-of-the-league Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Cottagers are 17th in the pecking order, one place and three points better than the relegation zone. Lose at home to Wolves, and the pressure will increase on Marco Silva’s side. They must stamp out any danger before it becomes an issue, as they approach a jam-packed winter schedule. Fulham have lost their last four, but I’m taking a chance on them making a timely return to winning ways.
Wolves are rock bottom of the pile. They’ve failed to win a game so far, drawing two and losing the other seven. Vitor Pereira’s men have scored seven goals in nine games, but conceded 19, leaving them with a minus-12 goal difference tally. Wolves started October drawing 1-1 at home with Brighton, but followed that with a 2-0 loss to Sunderland before sinking to a 3-2 home defeat to Burnley. Confidence is as low as their league position.
Here, we have two teams showing woeful form and in desperate need of a positive result. The victors will move up the charts, leaving the loser in a panic. Fulham won 2-1 when these sides last met, and I’m happy to oppose Wolves until they show us better. Fulham are by no means bankers at the minute, but they’re at home, have scored more goals than Wolves, and boast a tighter defence.
Nottingham Forest vs Man Utd, Saturday, 15:00 BST
Our third and final pick sees us stick with a Manchester United who look set to push into contention for the prize places. The Red Devils stumbled from one poor result to the next in the opening exchanges, but travel to the City Ground having won each of their previous three games, and four of their last five. Confidence is growing in the camp, proven by a battling 4-2 home win over Brighton less than a week ago.
Nottingham Forest hold the home advantage and are tasked with halting United’s progress. The locals are in the relegation zone with just five points on the board, three behind safety and three better than bottom club Wolves. The Tricky Trees are on a long winless run, and have lost each of their last four, including a 2-0 at Bournemouth last Sunday. A win would help ease the pressure, but there’s little in the stats to suggest better times are coming.
Man Utd are a team aiming high. They’ve won their last three games, beating Sunderland 2-0, Liverpool 2-1, and Brighton 4-2. If they can win at Anfield, I’m confident they can win at the City Ground. Their hosts last beat a team on the opening day of the season, defeating Brentford 3-1 at this venue.
