They failed to win three of their last five league games, but it didn’t matter too much. The damage had been done, and the title won.
Not content with winning in France and Europe, PSG then turned their attentions to the opening game of their Club World Cup campaign. They made light work of Atletico Madrid to raise the curtain in style. Fabian Ruiz scored the opener on 19 minutes, with Vitinha making it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time. Second-half goals from Mayulu and Lee Kang-In ensured a remarkable first win and the perfect start.
Brazilians show fighting spirit
Brazilian Serie A side Botafogo secured their place at the 2025 Club World Cup when winning the 2024 Copa Libertadores late last year. They make their first appearance in this tournament and hope for some beginner’s luck. Few football experts and pundits expect them to go all the way and lift the Club World Cup trophy, but they do have a chance of getting out of Group B and into the knockout rounds.
Like their opponents from Europe, Botafogo got off to a winning start when battling past the Seattle Sounders. The Brazilians had been written off in the betting, but proved it’s unwise to underestimate them, scraping through with a 2-1 victory. The result suggests a tight game, but the destination of the points was never in doubt. Botafogo took the lead on 28 minutes through Cunha and made it two before the break thanks to Igor Jesus. The MLS side responded with 75 minutes on the clock, but couldn’t get level.
Heading into this game with three points on the board, Botafogo knows it’s not a must-win. A share of the spoils would move them onto four points from a possible six, and that would likely be enough to finish in the top two and keep their dream alive. A win would be a huge statement of intent to the competition, with defeat leaving the Brazilians’ future involvement hanging in the balance.
